Preparing for an interview

The interview is your opportunity to shine and sell yourself to a prospective employer and research shows that people make their mind up about someone within the first few seconds of meeting them. It is always best therefore to get off to a good start!

In recruitment it does not always matter how good your academics read on paper, employers are usually more interested in your personality, presentation and previous experience. When there are several people being interviewed for one role it is normally interview performance that is the crucial factor when deciding who gets taken to the next stage, this means it is of utmost importance that you make a good impression during interview.

You need to make sure that you are fully prepared for the meeting prior to the interview; the following points should help you in preparation;

  • Check the date and time of interview
  • Make sure you have the address and telephone number for the company and are familiar with their office location and parking facilities
  • Make sure you know who you are meeting with and their position in the company
  • Research the company, have a look on their website, familiarize yourself with the sectors they recruit in, how long they have been established, any recent news articles about the company etc.
  • Plan some questions about the company, for example; company culture, projected growth of the company, training and development within the company
  • Make sure that you are punctual for the interview and look smart
